(Albuquerque) As many of you know, I am writing a book about the Girly Chew Hossencofft case. I am already quite fortunate as I have received wonderful support and direction from two excellent and established writers: Gregg Olsen and M. William Phelps. I want to take this opportunity to refer you to their superb books.

GREGG OLSEN

Gregg Olsen is among the elite true crime writers in the genre today. His book Bitter Almonds is the blueprint for anyone seeking to write nonfiction crime. Filled with facts, facts and more facts, the story of Stella Maudine Nickell’s cyanide murders is expertly reported and brilliantly told.

Olsen’s established body of work also include If Loving You Is Wrong, the story of Seattle school teacher turned- convicted pedophile, Mary Kay Letourneau.

REVIEW

Gregg Olsen’s IF LOVING YOU IS WRONG is a wonderfully researched book that makes the tabloid stories about Mary Kay Letourneau and her forbidden love sound like comic book stuff. Everyone who wants to understand the back story of the child-woman and her overweening passion for a man-child must read IF LOVING YOU IS WRONG. Olsen’s book is both gossipy and sympathetic, searing and brilliant. If Mary Kay is the Humbert Humbert of the female sex — and she is — this book is her Lolita. A must-read for both true crime aficionados and students of abnormal psychology! I read until 3 a.m.!

M. William Phelps

M. William Phelps is a full-time freelance writer who has published more than 65 articles on topics ranging from child abuse to corruption in law enforcement to politics to veterans’ rights and nearly everything in between. His articles and essays have appeared in The Providence Journal, The Springfield Journal, The Journal Inquirer, The Chronicle, The Hartford Courant, On the Scene Magazine, The Black World Today, Daily Meditations Magazine and The New London Day.

Phelps recently completed his much anticipated book, Perfect Poison: A Female Serial Killer’s Deadly Medicine. It is the chilling story of Kristen Gilbert, a Northampton, Mass., veterans affairs nurse who murdered patients under her care.

Perfect Poison is already getting many outstanding reviews.

REVIEW

In perfect harmony with a tradition set by the very best of true crime writers, M. William Phelps peels away the news clips, the trial transcripts and what everyone thinks they know about these murders and reveals the case’s rotten core . . . Phelps isn’t content with a retelling of what people think they already know about the Kristen Gilbert case. . . . [He] is reporting and writing at a level that has become rare in today’s true crime genre. The result is the kind of compelling account of terror that only comes when the author dedicates himself to unmasking the psychopath with facts, insight and the other proven methods of journalistic leg work.

—Lowell Cauffiel, author of HOUSE OF SECRETS, a New York Times best seller, EYE OF THE BEHOLDER, and FOREVER AND FIVE DAYS
