What the Court Record Shows About Linda Henning’s Competency: A Timeline

In rulings issued in late October 2026, Second Judicial District Judge Cindy Leos found that Linda Henning wasn’t competent at her 2002 trial, where a jury convicted Henning of felony murder, kidnapping and other charges. Leos vacated those convictions, granted a new trial, ordered Henning released pending that trial, and called for a new competency evaluation.
I’ve covered this case since 1999, when Girly Chew Hossencofft disappeared, first for KRQE and then for KOB in Albuquerque.
Competency has been a thread through the case for more than two decades, and it can be hard to follow. So I’ve started pulling the court record together in one place: an interactive timeline showing how the question has moved through the courts, with links to the orders and the docket so you can read them yourself. It’s a work in progress. I’ll add records as I get them, and I’ll mark what’s still unconfirmed.

This timeline was designed and built with the help of AI tools. Entries were checked against the sources cited and reviewed by me; those marked “To verify” are still being checked against the original filings.
